Size is always a relative matter; what may be too much for some, may be too little for other. But, if we follow simple logic, then size definitely matters. Who wants to sleep in a small bed and wake up with a sore body in the morning?! A few fairly strong reasons why a king size bed is the best you can choose for a good night sleep. Wouldn’t you agree.

First and foremost, your bed should offer you maximum comfort at night. Secondly, it needs to satisfy your sleeping pattern; whether you sleep stretched on your back, curled up, on your stomach, or a combination of all of these! Thirdly, it has to meet the sleeping pattern of your partner.   • 1590 Ware, England – The famous Hertfordshire carpenter Jonas Fosbrooke built the first big bed. It was meant for the White Hart Inn in Ware. Made from oak, it had four posters carved with marquetry. It’s dimensions were 10 by 11 feet (or 3 by 3.5 meters) and could accommodate 15 people at once. The bed is exhibited in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
  • The Great Bed of Ware was initially built as a tourist attraction for people that where traveling from London through Ware to Cambridge University. It was placed in the White Hart Inn, and people used to carve their names on it, or put red wax seals, which can still be seen today.
  • 1960 Los Angeles, California – The first big mattress was build for celebrity mansions. This bed is what will later become known as the king size bed.
  • 70’s and 80’s – Mass production of king size beds begun in the USA.
  • The king size bed varied in dimensions. The first one, as previously mentioned, was 3 by 3.5 meters. Next in line come the standard king size beds (182cm x 203cm), and the California king size beds (182cm x 213cm). The Super king size bed (in England) 182cm x 198cm and the Eastern king size bed (193cm x 203cm) are the models Europeans built to compete with the American models. The largest one present in modern days is the one produced by Select Comfort, measuring 203cm x 248cm.
